Palio Races of July and August 2022: Who’s Running

August 16, 2022 Palio of the Assumption

Here’s an overview of the ten contradas (contrade) that will compete in the August, 2022 Palio, in the order in which they were extracted (drawn). Please see Extraction of the Contrade post for more background on the process):

  • Tartuca (Turtle) – carried over from 2019
  • Lupa (She-Wolf) – carried over from 2019
  • Giraffa (Giraffe) – carried over from 2019
  • Civetta (Owl) – carried over from 2019
  • Leocorno (Unicorn) – carried over from 2019
  • Nicchio (Shell) – carried over from 2019
  • Valdimontone (Ram) – carried over from 2019
  • Onda (Wave) – (#1 extracted)
  • Selva (Forest) – (#2 extracted)
  • Chiocciola (Snail) (#3 extracted)

NOTES: As typical, the seven contradas that did not run in the most recent August Palio (2019, pre-Covid) are guaranteed to run in this event, listed above. Three additional contradas were extracted (drawn) during the Estrazione (Extraction) of the Contradas on Sunday, July 10, in the order listed above. This rounds out the final ten contradas that will compete in the Palio of the Assumption on August 16, 2022.

Rival Pairs in the Race: Turtle/Snail, Owl/Unicorn, Ram/Shell

Disqualified from this Palio: Goose

Not extracted, guaranteed to run next Aug, 2023: Tower, Dragon, Caterpillar, Panther, Goose, Eagle, Porcupine

WINNER: Leocorno (Unicorn contrada), with fantino (jockey) Giovanni Atzeni (nicknamed Tittia) upon a horse named Violenta da Clodia. Amazingly, this is Atzeni’s fourth Palio win in a row.

July 2, 2022 Palio of Provenzano: Who will Run?

  1. Tom,
Just found your website! Awesome! Thank you for such a detailed overview. Miss being there but your account provides up-to-date info that supports video live streaming.
Please give my regards to Giulio! I stopped in to see him in October 21 and my heart was so happy when he shouted, “Arizona” as a greeting!
Question what happened with Oca disqualified for two Palio?

    1. Hi Barbara, great to “hear” from you! And glad you could make it back there last year. I’m responding here from my WordPress comments account (I didn’t make this public, so it won’t be on the blog page, FYI). Does this go to your AOL address? Are you still at NAU? (Apologies, I don’t remember your recent affiliation). Thanks for your compliment about my web site, as I’ve been developing that as another educational tool for people (as well as a way to inform people of my little-known books). We were there recently in July to watch Pantera (they had a shot at winning, but not the strongest horse or jockey). It seemed that Giulio’s shop was shut and offered for lease, so we did not see him. We assumed he was a casualty of the Pandemic? If you saw him last year, though, maybe he’s not there for another reason. Take care and let me know how you’re doing and what you’re up to in Siena (future?). Best, Tom
